This specialized birding itinerary takes you through wetlands, forests, savannahs, and lakeshores, offering encounters with hundreds of East African endemics, migratory, and rare bird species. From the Serengeti plains to the Usambara Mountains, you’ll travel with expert guides to birding hotspots rich in avian diversity—while also enjoying big game sightings along the way.
Your birding adventure begins with an easy morning transfer from Arusha town to Arusha National Park, a remarkably diverse ecosystem often overlooked by safari-goffers. The short 40-minute drive gives you your first taste of Tanzania's birdlife, with roadside sightings of superb starlings and hadada ibises likely even before reaching the park gates. Morning exploration focuses on the Momella Lakes, a series of shallow alkaline pools that transform into living mosaics of color. Here, lesser ‑flamingos filter-feed in their thousands, their pink hues intensifying as they take ‑flight when startled. African fish eagles perch majestically on dead acacias, their haunting calls echoing across the water while hamerkops - those odd, hammer-headed waders - methodically patrol the shorelines for frogs and small fish. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Leaving the forested slopes of Arusha behind, your journey transitions to the golden savannas of Tarangire, where ancient baobabs stand like sentinels over a landscape teeming with avian life. The park's namesake river becomes your focal point, its seasonal waters attracting an extraordinary concentration of birds. Here, the air hums with activity as pygmy falcons—Africa's smallest raptors—patrol the bustling colonies of social weavers, their tiny forms perched watchfully near the spherical nests. As the sun lowers, the savanna quiets, save for the occasional call of a pearl-spotted owlet or the distant whoop of a hyena. The transition from Arusha’s forests to Tarangire’s open plains offers not just a change of scenery, but a whole new world of birdlife to discover. You will spend the night in Tarangire and get ready for the next day’s adventure. Dinner and overnight at the lodge
You will depart to Serengeti from Tarangire, the vast plains of the Serengeti unfold before you, a seemingly endless expanse of grasslands, woodlands, and rocky outcrops that support one of Africa's richest avian communities. Over four days, you'll explore the park's varied habitats, each offering unique birding opportunities against the backdrop of the world's most famous savanna. Your exploration begins in the Seronera Valley, the biological heart of the Serengeti. Here, among the acacia groves and seasonal streams, you'll search for the rufous-tailed weaver, a Serengeti endemic that constructs intricate nests dangling from thorn trees. Overhead, the unmistakable silhouette of lappet-faced vultures circles on broad wings, their bald, pink heads a stark contrast to the deep blue sky. These massive scavengers dominate carcasses, often displacing smaller vulture species with their sheer size and aggression.
Then the second day you get ready for even more exploration. After an early breakfast you will rest for the daytime getting ready for a night game drive. For those seeking a different perspective, an optional night drive reveals the Serengeti's nocturnal avian residents. A spotlight might catch the glowing eyes of a Verreaux's eagle-owl, Africa's largest owl, perched solemnly on a dead tree limb. The eerie calls of fiery-necked nightjars punctuate the darkness, while white-tailed mongoose scurry through the beam of light, their movements startling the occasional black-shouldered kite from its roost. Then the third day you will have a day time game drive Venturing into the Western Corridor, the landscape changes as the Serongeti's rivers carve through the plains. The riverine forests here are home to Schalow's turacos, their iridescent purple-and-green plumage ‑flashing as they move through the canopy. These elusive birds are more often heard than seen, their guttural calls echoing through the dense foliage. Along the riverbanks, pairs of African fish eagles perch prominently, their haunting duets a quintessential sound of African waterways
Your birding journey culminates in the extraordinary Lake Manyara National Park, where the alkaline waters of the lake merge with lush groundwater forests to create one of Tanzania's most diverse avian habitats. Over two days, you'll explore this compact yet spectacular park, where the density of birdlife is unmatched. As the first day end and the exhaustion of a two hours safari you will camp for the night, rest assured yet more is about to come
On the second day at lake Manyara you will have a full day exploration. A highlight of your time here is a canoe safari along the lake’s quieter margins (seasonal), where you’ll drift past reed cormorants drying their wings and malachite kingfishers—tiny ‑ashes of electric blue—darting among the papyrus. The stillness of the water allows for unparalleled close encounters with African jacanas walking delicately across lily pads and pied kingfishers hovering like helicopters before plunging for fish. As evening falls on your final day, the Manyara escarpment glows gold in the fading light, and the air fills with the calls of nightjars and owls. A farewell sundowner by the lakeshore offers a moment to reflect on the incredible diversity you’ve witnessed—from forest specialists to waterbirds, raptors to tiny sunbirds—all set against the dramatic backdrop of the Rift Valley. You will depart to Arusha by late evening back to your hotels making the end of your wonder journey.
